An arrested Nicholls football player had 84 grams of marijuana in his possession at the time of his Saturday arrest.

He also had a teammate with him in the car at the time of his arrest.

On Saturday, members of the Thibodaux Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle in the 600 block of East 1st Street.

The 2011 Black Ford Fusion was driven by Dai’jean Dixon, 20, of Slidell.

Dixon is a prominent wide receiver on the Nicholls football team.

Upon contact with Dixon and his front seat passenger, Nicholls freshman defensive back Jarius Monroe, officers detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the interior of the vehicle.

Dixon allegedly told authorities that he’d smoked marijuana and drank alcohol prior to the stop, but he denied being in possession of any.

Dixon then submitted to and passed a standardized field sobriety test, but denied officers’ request to search his vehicle.

A K-9 later arrived on the scene and alerted officers to the odor of narcotics on the vehicle, which allowed officers to conduct a search.

The search rendered findings of 84 grams of suspected marijuana located in the trunk of the vehicle.

A total of 29 grams of the 84 grams were found packaged into seven individually wrapped bags, which TPD said is common packaging for distribution.

Officers also found two scales containing suspected marijuana residue in the trunk.

Upon discovery of the drugs, Dixon admitted to authorities that the drugs were his, so he was taken into custody. Monroe was released without criminal charges.

Dixon is charged with speeding and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

He’s held on a $5,500 bond.
