A 27-year-old Baton Rouge native is in the custody of the Houma Police Department after he allegedly fired shots in Mechanicville.

On Aug. 4, shortly after noon, officers were called to Mechanicville in reference to a call of shots fired.

While responding, it was reported that a red sedan was passing in the area of Roselawn Avenue and fired shots.

Upon receiving the description, officers located the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Jovante Thomas, 27, of Baton Rouge.

During investigation, officers located a 9mm semi-automatic pistol under the driver’s seat.

At that point, Thomas was taken into custody.

As the investigation continued, HPD also learned that Thomas was in possession of illegal narcotics – such as heroin, cocaine, numerous pills, codeine, methamphetamine and others.

Thomas was arrested for illegal use of a weapon, 18-counts relative to narcotics possession, as well as possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance.

He was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail. No bond has been set.
