A Cut Off man received a 12-year prison sentence last week after pleading guilty to distribution of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Russell Mathieu, 38, pleaded guilty to those charges last week, avoiding a trial by reaching a deal with Lafourche Parish District Attorney Kristine Russell and prosecutors.

As part of his negotiated plea agreement, the Honorable Hugh “Buddy” Larose sentenced Mathieu to the 12-year sentence, which is to be served without the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence on the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon charge. He was also given a 10-year sentence on the distribution of Methamphetamine charge with the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

The sentences will run concurrently.

“The distribution of illegal narcotics is a menace to our community,” said Assistant District Attorney Shaun George, who prosecuted the case. “We believe it’s important during prosecution, though, to differentiate between drug dealers and those with addiction. The defendant was a drug dealer with a gun, making this sentence appropriate.”

George thanked the Lafourche Parish Drug Task force for their work in helping convict Mathieu.

“The Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force did a phenomenal job with their investigation, and helped secure this conviction,” George said. “They work hard for the people of this parish, and it showed with this investigation.”

Mathieu sold the methamphetamine to a confidential informant (C.I.) working with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force. Agents were able to secure a search warrant for the home of Mathieu, and during the search recovered a firearm.
