An illegal immigrant living in Houma was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to possession of child porn.

Jose Hernandez, 42, was given his sentence after pleading guilty to one count of distribution of pornography involving juveniles and 17 counts of possession of pornography involving juveniles.

The plea was made on Friday in court, and the news was announced on Saturday by Lafourche Parish District Attorney Kristine Russell.

Hernandez will not be given the benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

The sentences will be served concurrent and he will have to register as a sex offender, upon release.

Hernandez’s arrest came after an investigation was launched by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Unit in June 2018 after a tip was received that said that the suspect had uploaded a child porn video via social media.

Further investigation yielded that additional child pornography was in Hernandez’s possession.

The suspect was first arrested in Jan. 2019 and taken to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex for booking.

At the time of his arrest, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said Hernandez was not legally in the United States, adding that he thought the arrest showed the need for greater border security in the country.

“Child pornography is horrid, and a reproach to humanity. Those who manufacture, distribute or possess it must be held accountable – as they are all guilty of playing a role,” said Assistant District Attorney Jason Chatagnier, who prosecuted the case. “Federal, state and local agencies are working together to bring these abusers to justice. This is a victory in that fight.”

Jose Hernandez will begin serving his 18 concurrent sentences immediately.
