A long-term drug distribution investigation in St. Mary and Terrebonne parishes has led to two arrests, authorities said, one of whom is the son of a prominent civil rights advocate.

Keith Rhodes, 43, of Schriever and Brandon Boykin, 29, of Houma, were booked into the St. Mary Parish jail Friday morning.

Boykin is the son of Terrebonne Parish NAACP President Jerome Boykin.

He and Rhodes are charged with possession of marijuana intended for distribution and proceeds of drug sales. Boykin is charged with possession of a gun in the presence of a controlled, dangerous substance.

According to initial information confirmed with local law enforcement officials, Terrebonne Parish Narcotics Division agents had collected evidence leading them to both men. Early Friday a St. Mary deputy observed allegedly suspicious activity between the occupants of two vehicles in a Bayou Vista parking lot. Another interaction was allegedly observed nearby.

Deputies from both parishes observed both vehicles leaving the area, and stopped the one operated by Rhodes, a truck, for a failure to signal.

Rhodes was stopped on US 90 in Berwick, and reportedly smelled an odor of marijuana. Rhodes, authorities said, agreed to a search and a quarter pound of marijuana was seized. Also seized were marijuana edibles and $213 in cash.

Boykin was stopped near U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista and an odor of marijuana allegedly emanated from his vehicle. Deputies said they recovered 20 pounds of high grade marijuana, a handgun and $6,000 in cash.

Investigators reported that the money in both cases was derived from sale of marijuana obtained in Colorado – where it is legal – and brought to Louisiana for distribution in St. Mary and Terrebonne.

“Brandon is my son and I love my son but no one is above the law and I plan to hire an attorney to represent him in court,” Jerome Boykin. “One has nothing to do with the other. He is not a juvenile, he is an adult. It is something I am certainly not going to run away from it is something I am going to deal with.

Boykin is free after posting a $35,000 bond today.
