A 41-year-old man is in the custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, accused of raping a handicapped woman.

An anonymous call was made to TPSO around 9:41 p.m. on Wednesday night requesting a welfare check at a residence.

TPSO Chief Criminal Deputy Col. Terry Daigre said authorities were initially told that all was well at the residence, but the responding deputy noticed that something was wrong.

“After viewing bruises on the woman, the deputy asked additional questions,” Col. Daigre said. “The victim provided information that indicated crimes had been committed and the deputy notified detectives and other resources.”

The suspect, Dennis Bourgeois, 41, was arrested and booked on charges of first-degree rape, aggravated battery and cruelty to the infirm – all felony charges.

Bond is set at $250,000.

The victim was taken to a local hospital.

“This was a good example of the kind of proactive police work we have come to expect of our road patrol deputies,” Col. Daigre said. “We also want to make clear to people that anytime they suspect a friend, relative or neighbor is being abused they should call us.”
