Suspect arrested for firing a shot at vehicle; 3 friends who helped hide him get obstruction of justice

A Bourg man is in the custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly fired a gun at a family member’s vehicle.

Three others are also in custody for allegedly helping the suspect elude officers by taking him into the marsh, then denying they knew where he was.

Col. Terry Daigre, TPSO’s Chief Criminal Deputy, said deputies were called to the 100 block of La. Highway 55 at about 3 p.m. on Aug. 9 in reference to a disturbance with a gun.

The complainant said she was driving a friend’s vehicle on La. Highway 55 when she saw Spencer Riney, 23, driving a vehicle and towing a boat.

Due to the low speed of travel, she was also able to ID the front seat passenger as Trey Shugars, 25.

She said that there were two rear seat passengers, but they were not visible to her.

The victim said that as they were passing, Riney fired a pistol at the vehicle she was driving, then sped off.

Evidence was recovered to support the statement.

A deputy located the vehicle Riney was driving at an area boat launch with an empty boat trailer.

The deputy then observed the boat with all four men inside.

Upon the deputy coming in sight, the boat left the area and returned shortly after with just Shugars, Alvin Lee, 22 and Erin Neal, 35, inside.

Upon questioning, all three initially denied that Riney was ever in the boat with them.

Riney was later located walking on a levee in the area and was taken into custody.

All four suspects were then arrested and taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail.

Riney is charged with aggravated criminal damage to property. He has a $25,000 bond.

He was also booked on three outstanding warrants for failure to appear with a total bond on those charges set at $806.

Shugars, Lee and Neal were all booked for obstruction of justice. Each carries a $1,000 bond.
