An inmate in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center is now facing additional charges after authorities were able to tie him to other crimes regarding vehicle burglaries and attempted burglaries in the area.

On Sept. 26, authorities arrested Deronte Brown, 20, of Thibodaux, after he was caught on video breaking into a vehicle on Buccaneer Road in Gray during mid-August.

Authorities said nothing was taken from the vehicle, but Brown was identified on video, which led to a warrant and ultimately his arrest.

Meanwhile, on Sept. 21, 2017, authorities began investigating a string of vehicle burglaries in the Paradise Cove subdivision in Gray. In that incident, authorities said several vehicles were burglarized with only loose change being reported stolen.

Authorities developed Brown as the lead suspect in the incident and they obtained video evidence which allegedly showed him trying to break into locked vehicles in the area.

After seeing that, authorities obtained additional warrants for the cases.

Brown, who was still in the Lafourche Jail after the initial arrest, was booked this week on the additional charges.

In total, he now is charged with six counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle and two counts of attempted simple burglary of a motor vehicle.

His bond is set at $120,000.

In this case, the suspect only touched unlocked vehicles, moving on from those with locked doors.

This caused Sheriff Craig Webre to send caution to citizens to keep cars safe – especially at night.

“These incidents follow a trend that burglars seek the easy target of an unlocked vehicle, leaving the locked ones behind,” Webre said. “Most residents have a routine of locking their exterior doors at night before bed. We encourage citizens to add their vehicles to that routine.”
