A traffic stop turned into a suspect being arrested on multiple drug-related offenses.

On Oct. 4 at approximately 10:33 p.m., a Thibodaux Police Department K9 Unit witnessed a blue Toyota Camry run a red light at the intersection of Rienzi Drive and North Canal Boulevard in the city.

The vehicle was stopped and the K9 Officer spoke with the driver, Javoris Talbert, 21, of 120 Jerome Court, Napoleonville.

Officers determined that Talbert was driving with a suspended license.

The K9 Officer on the scene said he could smell what he believed to be marijuana coming from the inside of the vehicle. At that time, Talbert allegedly admitted that he had smoked marijuana earlier and the smell was probably still on his clothes.

At that time, Talbert and his passenger, Vanshander Jones, 19, were both asked to step out of the vehicle while a K9 sniff was performed.

The K9 dog alerted the presence of an illegal narcotic in the vehicle, which led to a search. During the search, a loaded 9 mm handgun was found, as well as two prescription bottles containing a total of about 16 gross grams of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, including a digital scale.

Another officer arrived to assist with a pat down of Jones and he immediately resisted, which led to the officer taking him to the ground and placing her in handcuffs.

Jones was charged with resisting an officer. She was taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center and released on a summons after being fingerprinted.

Talbert was also arrested and charged with illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle with a suspected license and a traffic control signal violation (running a red light).

He was booked and given a $4,200 bond, which he posted the next day.
