Louisiana State Police Troop C says a suspected drunken driver was responsible for a one-car crash this morning that killed a 16-year-old Houma girl.

Shortly before 1 a.m. this morning, troopers were notified of a single-vehicle fatality crash on La. Highway 57 near Canebreak Avenue. The crash took the life of Makayla Gregoire, 16, of Houma.

Preliminary investigation of the incident revealed that Reva Hood, 35, of Houma, was driving a 2004 GMC Yukon southbound on La. Highway 57. For reasons not yet known, Hood ran off the road to the right and struck a tree.

Hood was unrestrained during the crash and was not injured.

Gregoire was seated in the rear of the vehicle unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner’s Office.

Authorities suspect impairment was a factor in the crash. Hood was arrested by troopers and given a breath test, which determined she was over the legal limit for alcohol at the time of the crash.

She was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Center on charges of vehicular homicide, second-offense DWI, obstruction of justice, carless operation of a motor vehicle, no seat belt and interfering with the duties of an officer.
