Deputies performing proactive patrol in the vicinity of a motel that has been the subject of numerous complaints about the presence of drugs and other illegal activity were assaulted Friday by a 55-year-old Houma man as they attempted to arrest him on narcotics charges.

At about 7:05 p.m. on Feb. 28, 2020, in a parking lot at the Red Carpet Inn on Bayou Black Drive, the deputies encountered a vehicle whose lone occupant was engaged in a sexual activity. As one deputy attempted to remove the man from the vehicle another deputy saw what appeared to be rocks of crack cocaine from the passenger side and entered the vehicle to secure the evidence.

While struggling with the deputy on the driver’s side the subject started the vehicle and attempted to drive off with the one deputy still inside. The struggle continued and a deputy activated his Taser. After the subject was removed from the truck, he continued fighting the deputies until he was subdued.

Barry Magnus Gaston, 117 Fifth St., was booked at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex for battery of a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, attempted obstruction of justice and transactions involving proceeds from illegal drug activity. He remained jailed Saturday in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
