A 21-year-old Houma woman is in the custody of the Houma Police after a traffic stop turned into a chase and then a drug arrest.

On Aug. 7 at around 9:25 p.m., a member of the HPD Uniform Patrol Division was patrolling the area of Main near Lafayette Street when a vehicle was seen speeding.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver attempted to evade police by cutting through the parking lot of a business located at the corner of Lafayette and Park.

Authorities stayed in pursuit and eventually pulled over the vehicle at the corner of Barataria and Main.

As the officer approached the vehicle and was explaining the reason for the stop, he could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

The officer then identified the driver as Jasmine Dupont, 21, and asked her to exit the vehicle.

She refused and attempted to lock the door to her car.

As the officer attempted to unlock the door and remove her from the car, she rolled the window up on the officer’s arm, but he was eventually able to unlock and open the door.

Dupont was then removed from the vehicle and authorities secured the scene for further investigation.

A member of HPD’s Narcotics Division arrived, as well as his K-9 partner “Gunner” to assist.

An external sweep of the vehicle was performed and Gunner indicated to officers the presence of illegal narcotics.

A search of the vehicle was then conducted and the investigating officer located illegal narcotics within the purse of the suspect. The officer located powder cocaine, Xanax bars, and a large quantity of cash.

As the officer’s search continued, he also located a 9mm semi-automatic handgun from the vehicle.

Dupont was then arrested and booked for the charges of speeding, Possession of a firearm while in the presence of a CDS, Possession of Xanax, Possession With the Intent to Distribute Cocaine, Possession of Cocaine, Transaction Involving Proceeds from CDS Activity, Battery of a Police Officer and Improper Use of a Private Drive.
