Terrebonne General Medical Center and Ochsner are partnering together to remind folks of the dangers and symptoms of strokes.

In conjunction with May being Stroke Awareness Month, the partners sent out a release offering stroke awareness tips, while also offering warning signs people can use to detect if they or someone they know is having one themselves.

As part of Stroke Awareness Month, medical workers have said that continued education on warning signs of symptoms is vital to prevention of one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.

According to experts, there is a four-prong system people can use to try and diagnose if someone looks like they are having a stroke.

It’s the acronym FAST:

F is for face. Is the person’s face drooping?

A is for arms. Can the person lift both arms?

S is for speech. Is the person slurring words?

T is for time. Call 9-1-1 immediately because with a stroke, time is brain.

For those who are having a stroke, TGMC and Ochsner Health System have partnered on a unique Telestroke Program, which joins experts from both facilities to consult immediately with Oshsner vascular neurologists 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while using telemedicine equipment to determine the best treatment options for patients.

“The unfortunate reality is that three of every four stroke patients do not receive treatment fast enough for the best chance of a full recovery,” said Dr. Joni Claville, with TGMC’s Emergency Medicine. “Hence, our partnership with Ochsner Health System allows us to provide timely and reliable diagnoses.”

Since the partnership began in 2012, more than 520 patients have been treated via the technology.
