This March, create your own rainbow of flavors just in time for St. Patrick’s Day! Try this fun and educational project with things that you already have on hand. Instead of eating those sugary candies, let’s use them to create!

You can get creative by making patterns, images or shapes, but either way the science lesson is the same. Each color of candy has a slightly different chemical makeup that when dissolved creates a solution with slightly different properties. The chemicals create a barrier preventing the solutions from mixing, much like saltwater and freshwater.

The mesmerizing results as the colors dissolve and travel based on your unique design and color choices are endless. Gather that candy and get to work creating art and science!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Candy such as Skittles or M&M’s
  • Warm water
  • Pitcher
  • White plate or pie dish

WHAT TO DO:

STEP 1
Arrange your candy on the plate or pie dish in a pattern, image or shape..

STEP 2
Fill the pitcher with warm water and pour gently, ensuring water is touching the base of the candy. Do not submerge candy entirely.

STEP 3
The color on the candies will immediately begin to dissolve and move. Continue to watch the water change and the colors run for up to 10 minutes, depending on the scale of your pattern or image.

STEP 4
Do it again! Each time will yield a new result and pattern!

TIP: If you do happen to snack on a candy, brush your teeth immediately after!
