Big changes are coming to the ACT test next year.
Decision makers who govern the test’s rules and procedures announced today that beginning in the fall of 2020, students will be able to sign up to take just one section of the test, as opposed to the current format where students have to take the entire test each time they sign up.
This means that a student who scores well in a few of the subjects on one test will now be able to “bank” those scores and then try to do better by testing only in the subject areas where they seek improvement.
Students will be able to send their new “superscore” to universities during applications to merge their highest-ever scores in all of the four subjects (reading, science, math and English). A fifth subject, writing, is optional for test takers.
Officials with the ACT test said they made the change because of slight variances from test-to-test, which can sometimes skew results. They also believe that by allowing for a “superscore” to be created, universities will be able to better predict the performance of students when offering scholarships and admission.
Students are allowed to take the test a dozen times before college.
