The Morganza Spillway will not be opening on Saturday, as previously reported.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers announced this afternoon that the spillway’s opening will instead begin on June 6.

The delay is due to changes in river level forecasts, which call for the Mississippi River to reach 60 feet at the structure on June 9, as opposed to the previously forecasted June 5.

This allows more time to leave the structure closed.

The Army Corps of Engineers said its intent it to only operate the structure when needed to keep additional water out of the Atchafalaya Basin.

That water is why folks in West Terrebonne are closely monitoring this situation. Once opened, parts of that area could flood and some residential areas may be affected.
