Lafourche Parish President said the parish had a little luck on its side with Barry.

“We were lucky and did not get some of the most severe rain,” Cantrelle said. “However, we must continue to be careful during today’s residual effects.”

As reported earlier, Cantrelle has lifted all evacuation orders and has terminated the parish’s curfew, as of 7:30 a.m. today.

Cantrelle said the parish’s sandbag locations closed at 10 a.m. and all emergency calls should now be directed to 911.

Beginning tomorrow, Cantrelle asks that residents begin to report damages so that Lafourche can provide documentation to State and Federal authorities.

Cantrelle updated the public on some flood issues active in the parish right now, adding that his office will move swiftly to react as situations arise.

He said the Lafourche Parish Government Public Works crews are monitoring levees around the clock and have constructed a temporary levee at the North American Shipyard to control storm waters. The levee is holding well as a temporary storm surge protection.

The Department of Public Works and the North Lafourche Levee District have added sandbags to strengthen several other levees and are closely monitoring the Des Allemands levee, the Allied Shipyard levee and the Leighton-Morvant levees.

“We are prepared to address anything that may occur,” Cantrelle said.

Cantrelle said several miles of the levee in lower Point Aux Chenes did overtop yesterday, which prompted a mandatory evacuation of the area.

But he said the waters have since receded and are in the process of being fully under control.

The parish president said there are no other known flooding issues in the parish.

Louisiana State Police have opened La. Highway 1 to vehicular traffic and roadways are clear to and within Fourchon.

Crews have cleared debris from La. Highway 1 from the Leon Theriot Flood Gate to Grand Isle, but drivers are asked to still be careful.

President Cantrelle still urges residents to stay off the roads as power line crews repair poles to restore power to all neighborhoods.
