Capital One announced today that more than 100 million people in the United States were affected by a data breach against the company.
It is not known how many of those 100 million, if any, are in the Houma-Thibodaux area.
The bank, which has several local branches, said about 140,000 social security numbers of credit card customers and about 80,000 bank accounts linked to those accounts have been accessed by an unauthorized user.
The biggest area breached were Capital One small business credit card applicants from 2005-2019.
The bank announced the data breach today, stating that the suspect responsible for the incident was arrested by the FBI.
Capital One said it believes it’s unlikely that the information was used for fraud or disseminated by the individual, but they will continue to cooperate with the FBI to further investigate.
They will offer free credit monitoring and identity protection to all those affect.
The bank also says that no online logins were compromised so users do not need to reset their passwords.
