Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre wants to remind citizens to exercise caution while using fireworks this holiday season.

Across the way in Terrebonne, the poppers are off-limits, punishable to citation or fines.

Webre released a list of holiday firework popping times this week, and firework lovers should be happy – you can pop them starting at 9 a.m. on any day until Jan. 2 when they become off-limits.

From Dec. 26-30, firework hours are from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. On New Year’s Eve, the hours are 9 a.m. – 2 a.m., and on Jan. 1 poppers are fair game from 9 a.m. to midnight.

Over at the fireworks tents, business seems to be going pretty good.

According to Brock Orgeron with Champs Fireworks in Mathews, the poppers are going off the shelves. He said that artillery shells, sparklers, water dynamites and other items are among the most popular items this season.

The fireworks guru said that a shopper can pay as much as $400 for a variety box that contains a what’s what of fireworks. But they can also pay as little as 29 cents for a string-pull party popper.

“We can fit any budget,” Orgeron said.

Orgeron added that the busiest days are the days before and after Christmas and New Years.

“There is a lot of sitting around for a lot of the season,” Orgeron. “There are a few days that get busy. New Year’s Eve will make or break a season. Christmas Eve and even Christmas day are busy, as well.”

Orgeron said that fireworks are actually big business – if one plays his/her cards right. He estimates that smaller tents can make around $15,000 a season with the larger tents sometimes hauling in as much as $50,000 during the two-week holiday stretch.
