Fletcher Technical Community College announced today the launch of its “Falcon Academy”, which will provide alternatives to detention for at-risk youth who would otherwise be sent to Juvenile Justice facilities by local district court judges.
The program is made possible due to a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice.
The goal of the program is to divert juveniles from deeper contact with the juvenile justice system by providing education, career counseling, technical skill training and mentoring.
“We are honored to have been selected for this grant that will allow the creation of the Falcon Academy,” commented Chancellor Dr. Kristine Strickland. “Our mission at Fletcher focuses our efforts in providing access to education and training to help continually improve the lives of those in our communities. The efforts of the team through the implementation of the Academy will allow our fellow citizens an opportunity to improve their lives and reduce recidivism.”
The Academy will employ mentors who will work with the youth to provide positive guidance and promote social and emotional adjustment, enhancing life skills and independent living skills.
The mentors, some of whom will be reformed offenders, will be sent to LaPlazita Institute in Albuquerque for training to create a model for mentorship that can be replicated in various jurisdictions.
The program will be housed at Fletcher Technical Community College’s Thibodaux facility. The grant will be managed through Fletcher’s WorkReadyU/Adult Basic Education program to assure students receive all the services they need to succeed. It is anticipated the Academy will see its first students in early 2020.
