The Times has learned through former State Rep. Hunt Downer that former State Senator Butch Gautreaux passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The former Senator’s Facebook page shared the following message today: “The Gautreaux family would like to thank all of you for the continued prayers, love, and support for our beloved “Butch.” He was such a wonderful husband, dad, and Popee. It’s with a heavy heart that yesterday he left this Earth to be with God. Please continue to pray for peace for Butch and our family during this time of mourning.”

D.A. “Butch” Gautreaux was 73. He represented the Morgan City area and parts of Lafourche/Terrebonne in Senate District 21 from 2000-2012. Prior to that he was a State Representative from 1996-2000.

Editor’s Note: I personally knew Mr. Butch, as my dad served in the Legislature with him for years. I purchased furniture for my first apartment from him at Today’s Furniture in Morgan City. My sincerest condolences to his family.
