The Houma-Thibodaux area officially has not one, but two skateparks for locals to enjoy.

Officials in Golden Meadow confirmed to The Times on Thursday morning that the town’s newly constructed skatepark is officially open to public – ending a lengthy construction period, which started this past June.

Town officials confirmed the news later in the day on social media, telling local skaters to take care of the park, which has been planned in town government for several years.

“Everyone enjoy,” Golden Meadow Police Chief Reggie Pitre said on Facebook. “Have fun, be safe and enjoy YOUR skatepark.”

The park was parish-funded, and cost more than $300,000.

The idea came from former town councilwoman Priscilla Mounic, who said there was a segment of the population who enjoyed skating, but were shut out from area recreation because of the lack of places to participate in the area.

“Our children shouldn’t have to go to Houma to have fun doing something they love,” she said during a planning meeting.

Golden Meadow Mayor Joey Bouziga said the town will not assume liability for any injury that occurs at the park. He said signs are posted around the facility that warn skaters that they’re skating at their own risk.
