A 14-year-old Houma boy was severely injured when he was struck by a pickup on a heavily-traveled thoroughfare Monday night, and remains in critical condition at a New Orleans hospital.

Trooper Evan Harrell, a spokesman for State Police Troop C, said that at 5:49 p.m., Matthew Taylor Clements was crossing the 700 block of Bayou Gardens Boulevard and was in the eastbound lane when the 2009 Silverado hit him.

The driver of the truck, 23-year-old Spencer Coll of Houma, was brought to Troop C and underwent a breath test, which was negative for the presence of alcohol.

No criminal charges have been filed but an investigation is ongoing, according to Harrell.

Clements was rushed to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center by an Acadian ambulance, escorted by Terrebonne Parish deputies. He was then airlifted to University Hospital in New Orleans.

Word of the incident – and scores of posts urging prayers – appeared on local Facebook pages, where the boy’s mother, Becky Clements, expressed thanks and said his condition was critical. He was brought into surgery, she posted, and had experienced severe trauma.
