Lafourche Parish’s Veterans Affairs is extending its days of service at the parish’s Mathews location.

The Mathews office, located in Lafourche’s government complex, will now be open on Thursdays as well as the Tuesdays it was already open. The offices are open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break from 12-1 p.m.

Kelli Woods, a Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs official who staffs Lafourche’s VA offices, announced the extension earlier this week. According to Lafourche Public Information Officer Caroline Eschette, the large demand for additional service at the Mathews location justified the state’s extension of service.

Lafourche will now how have a VA office open every day of the work week, with the Thibodaux office open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with the same midday closure for lunch.

The Mathews location was reopened in March after being unstaffed for about two years, according to Eschette. The state requested the office open again, and Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle accommodated the request. The centralized Mathews location gives veterans from the southern part of Lafourche more access to assistance in receiving benefits and care.
