Waiting till the last minute to get a gift for a loved one?

Well, instead of fighting the holiday rush at a store or mall, the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter (LPAS) invites residents to attend its “Home for the Holidays” event Friday from 1 to 5 p.m.

LPAS is putting on the event in conjunction with Hope for Animals, Hail Mary Rescue and Recycled Paws Rescue.

Adopters will get their Christmas pictures taken with their new pets, and coffee and cookies will be available.

“I’d love to see the public come out before Christmas to show their support for the animals of Lafourche Parish,” said LPAS Manager Hilary Knight. “We will have adoptable animals available from LPAS as well as from other local rescue groups. It will be a good time for all.”

Knight has made it her priority to find as many homes for animals since taking over the shelter a few weeks ago. With the help of several placement partners, she and her staff saw 15 animals leave the shelter just in the first part of last week alone.

Lafourche Parish Community Services Deputy Director Reggie Bagala said the shelter would like to build on this momentum at Friday’s “Home for the Holidays” event.

“This event is an example of how we are trying our best to make our community a better place for the animals whose care we are entrusted with,” said Bagala.

As of last Friday, Marco – a 1-year-old Shepard mix – was among the many animals available for adoption at the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter.
