A local author is offering an insider’s view of life on Grand Isle in the 1940s and 1950s.

“Remembering Grand Isle: A Memoir” was penned by Cut Off resident Elson Trahan Jr., who grew up on the island raised by his grandmother and grandfather.

Trahan, now retired after 32 years working for the United States Postal Service, said the memoir offers personal experiences he enjoyed as a young boy and into his teenage years.

“This period of my life formed who I am,” Trahan said. “Through this book, my desire is to leave a little history of a few unforgettable people who lived on the island, describing what life was like for them during those years.”

In the mid-20th century, life on the island wasn’t like how things are today.

The book remembers a time when the popular tourist destination was filled with cucumber fields, green grass and fun for all. The memoir tells stories of hunting, fishing, ball games, carnivals and the island’s famous dance halls, which hosted thousands of people from around Lafourche Parish and beyond.

Trahan also remembers a time when the island wasn’t yet modern – not yet having electricity, gas or running water. He also depicts Hurricane Flossy, as well.
