Local dental practice performs free services for veterans

Today, Houma Family Dental participated in Freedom Day USA — a day when dental practices offer free 30-minute dental procedures to active, veteran and retired military men and women and their families.

“We wanted to host this day as a way of saying thank you to those who have served with all the sacrifices they’ve made,” Houma Family Dental’s Dr. Stephen Morgan said. “This is our way to say we appreciate the freedoms that we have. This is our way of giving back.”

Around 60 active and retired military personnel and their family members visited the facility, located at 5683 La. Highway 311 in Houma, today to receive a free dental cleaning, filling or extraction.

The patients’ ages ranged from one to 99 years old.

“It’s nice,” said Air Force member Timothy Dalton II. “I definitely don’t sacrifice as much as others in the military who are deployed, but it’s nice to feel appreciated.”

Dalton and his one-year-old daughter Maia visited the facility today for dental cleanings.

Dentists and hygienists from Thibodaux, the New Orleans area and Baton Rouge joined the Houma Family Dental staff in volunteering their time to perform the services.

“We have a good group of men and women from all over,” Morgan said. “I just want to give an extended thank you to those who have volunteered here. I have a great, wonderful staff who opened their hearts, have a great attitude and committed to taking care of everybody.”

All the military members who visited the practice today got to drop their name in a raffle for a chance to win a free Peyton and Eli Manning signed football, too.

“My father served in the Air Force, and my grandfather served in tours in Iwo Jima,” Morgan said. “I’m not a military member, but I know that military life can be challenging, can be tough. We have so many freedoms as Americans, and they’ve made it possible.”
