Recently, we’ve spoken to area business leaders who’ve collectively said that they believe the worst of the area’s economic recession is over.

This past week, some statistics were released which backed those statements.

Louisiana posted its lowest unemployment rate more than a decade, per statistics released this week.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June 2019 was 4.3 percent, which marked a .7 percent decline from the same time one year ago. That decrease is the largest one posted by any of the 50 states in our country.

The 4.3 percent unemployment rate is also the lowest such rate that Louisiana has had in 11 years – dating back to the peak of the state’s economic boom in the last decade.

Governor John Bel Edwards chimed in on the numbers yesterday, saying that he believes it’s a testament to the state’s resiliency given some of the events we’ve had to deal with in the past, including storms, recessions and, of course, the BP Oil Spill.

“At 4.3 percent, our unemployment rate continues to be the lowest in 11 years, which is a testament to the continued strength of our economy,” Edwards said. “This month, we also showed the largest unemployment decline since last year of any state. With the highest GDP and personal income in our state’s history and the lowest unemployment in 11 years, Louisiana is headed in the right direction.”
