The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office believes every area child deserves to have a bike.
They’re hoping to team with community members this holiday to make that wish a reality for as many area kids as possible.
Sheriff Craig Webre announced this week that donations are being accepted for the parish’s annual Christmas bike giveaway.
Webre said the LPSO-sponsored function is one of his favorite things he gets to do every year.
He said in the area’s current downward economic swing, he hopes the community can rally together to help as many needy kids as possible.
“This past year has been tough for many area families and we want to help ensure a gift for children who might otherwise not receive one,” Webre said. “This giveaway
is only possible thanks to the generosity of our own citizens, and we thank you, on behalf of all the families that have benefited and will benefit from your selflessness.”
Webre said he wants everyone in Lafourche to know anyone can help make the bike giveaway a success – even those who don’t have available funds to make a donation.
Webre said beginning on December 1, his office will be accepting bikes that are either new or that used but only need minor repairs.
LPSO accepts donations year-round, but newer, less used bikes are preferred for the giveaway, which has donated more than 3,800 bikes to needy children since its existence.
Last year alone, LPSO gave 280 bikes during the holiday season.
But Webre said citizens without funds are still encouraged to participate to make the event a success.
Beginning Thursday, Webre said his office will take nominations of any family in need who would enjoy receiving a bike this holiday season.
To submit a child, one should call (985) 632-8836.
During the conversation, one should be prepared to offer the child’s name, age, gender, address and phone number.
LSPO said it cannot give a 100 percent guarantee that the request will be honored because of high demand. Because of that, it is also asked that only two bikes can be
requested per family.
Those unable to give a bike, but who still want to participate are encouraged to do so.
Webre said cash donations can be dropped off at any LPSO location around the parish.
If giving money, it’s asked that checks be made payable to the Lafourche Deputies Association with the words “Bicycle Giveaway” listed in the memo line.
“There are plenty of families looking to help their fellow citizens and this program provides that opportunity,” Webre said.
