Gerald Michel is seeking re-election to his seat on the Terrebonne Parish Council.

Michel, the current councilman in District 3 announced his intentions on Monday morning in a release issued to local media.

Michael won election in 2015. He said he looks forward to continuing the work he’s done over the past four years to help the people of Terrebonne Parish.

Election Day is Oct. 12.

“I am pleased to announce my candidacy for re-election to the Terrebonne Parish District 3 Council Seat,” Michel said. “I’ve learned so much during the past four years and have put that knowledge to work for you. Your councilman must have the willingness and ability to learn about the complicated issues that present themselves in the operation of parish government. Whether the issues are about insurance, tax roll forwards, personnel, drainage, levees or the intricacies of the parish budget, your councilman must have the capacity to understand these issues. Without such capacity, the councilman simply becomes a follower.”

Michel has often disagreed with Parish President Gordon Dove during the past four years, and the two have had heated spats during several meetings.

But Michel said he takes pride in standing up for the things he believes in, adding that he believes he has a great understanding of the things that are important to Terrebonne Parish voters.

Michel said he wants to ask for the public’s vote and also urged those who do not live in his district to vote for candidates who will not “rubber stamp” everything done by the administration.

“I’ve developed a thick skin, which allows me to endure the seemingly inevitable bullying and criticism which come naturally to seasoned politicians when you disagree with them,” he said. “…As the councilman for District 3, I will continue to the betterment of Terrebonne Parish.”
