Nicholls State University is trying to feed the hungry this Thanksgiving season.

The university announced this week that it will be kicking off its annual food drive this month with the hopes of feeding the needy.

The annual drive, called Nicholls CAN, is a campus-wide movement to donate non-perishable food items each fall. The collection this year begins on Oct. 29 and will end on Nov. 9.

According to Michael Williams, an associate professor of art and the coordinator of the food drive, the goal each year is to generate one can per student, faculty and staff on campus, a number that amounts to roughly 7,000. Last year, the Nicholls community did that times two, generating more than 14,000 items of food.

“I feel that one of the most important things we can do as a university is to give back to our community and this is an example of that,” Williams said. “I feel better knowing that Nicholls is helping secure a meal for a child and their family during the holiday season.”

Annually, more than 5 million households in the United States require the services of a food bank. The cans generated by the drive will be donated to area food banks for use this holiday season.

Louisiana ranks No. 49 in food security and statistics show that more than 20 percent of our residents have “limited” or “uncertain” access to foods.

There will be a little fun in the philanthropy, as well. On Nov. 5, the Nicholls Student Government Association will sponsor a Can Wars competition where departments can create art using cans. The most creative and the most school spirit designs will each be given a $250 cash prize.
