Bayou Region congressman Steve Scalise R-Metairie, who is also the House Majority Whip, was shot and wounded Wednesday morning on a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., various national media outlets reported. He was with other members of a Republican baseball team when a lone gunman, who has been apprehended, opened fire.

At least five injuries were reported by a congressional staff member, including law enforcement officers.

Scalise’s office issued a statement at 8:38 a.m. confirming that Scalise was shot in the hip and transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he was undergoing surgery but listed in stable condition.

“Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone,” the statement reads. “He is grateful for the brave actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues. We ask that you keep the Whip and others harmed in this incident in your thoughts and prayers.”

Scalise has represented Louisiana’s 1st congressional district since 2008. Prior to that he served four months in the state senate and twelve years in the house. He is the senior member of Louisiana’s congressional delegation.

He has made frequent appearances at local functions in Terrebonne Parish.
