A man in Houma was killed Tuesday night by police gunfire.

According to sketchy initial information, the incident occurred on the 100 block of Agnes Street on Houma’s east side. Houma City Police responded to an incident there at about 7 pm, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Jesse LaGrange, whose agency is handling the investigation.

State Police and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office were called to assist.

Under circumstances still not publicly disclosed a Houma officer shot the man. The other agencies were not involved with the shooting.

A law enforcement source said the man had fired at police first but neither LaGrange nor Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman would supply details, so the claim could not be confirmed. No police officers were injured, Coleman said.

“The LSP Bureau of Investigations and LSP Crime Lab will work to ensure all the facts are gathered and a thorough investigation is done,” LaGrange said. “This is an active investigation in the early stages.”
