Eight local teams are still in the running for girls’ basketball state championships.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced postseason brackets on Monday afternoon, and eight local teams reached the field among four, separate brackets, ranging from Class 5A and going all the way down to Division IV.

In Class 5A, the Thibodaux Lady Tigers earned a spot in the field after enjoying a solid, 17-win season under first-year coach Ashley Adams.

Thibodaux is the No. 29-seed in the field, and they will face a stiff challenge in the opening round – a date with No. 4 Denham Springs.

The Lady Jackets are 26-5 on the season. They haven’t faced anyone in District 7-5A, but they do have some local flare.

They faced Houma Christian and E.D. White during the regular season, falling to the Christian Warriors and defeating the Lady Cardinals – both games taking place before the start of district play.

In Class 4A, local teams are scattered all across the top of the bracket, and two are favorites to reach the Top 28.

In that field, Ellender is the No. 3 seed – an honor they earned after rolling through the regular season with an unblemished, 10-0 record in District 7-4A.

The Lady Patriots will host No. 30 Belaire in the opening round on Thursday night.

Also home in Class 4A will be South Lafourche and South Terrebonne – the two biggest challengers to the Lady Patriots during the season.

The Lady Tarpons earned the No. 4 seed after posting a dominant, 26-4 regular season.

They will host No. 29 Abbeville in Galliano on Thursday night.

For South Terrebonne, the matchup is a lot more evenly matched on paper.

The Lady Gators are the No. 15 seed. They will take on No. 18 Karr on Thursday night in Bourg.

In select school brackets, four locals are competing, and one is the No. 1 seed.

In Division II, E.D. White earned the No. 6 seed, while Vandebilt will enter at No. 16.

In Division IV, Houma Christian will enter postseason as one of the favorites to win the State Championship.

The Christian Warriors were 23-7 during the season – easily earning the No. 1 seed.

Also in the Division IV Playoffs will be Covenant Christian Academy.

The Lions were 7-7 on the season, earning the No. 16 seed in the bracket. •
