Vandebilt Catholic High School is looking for a new head football coach.

The school announced this week that it’s parting ways with five-year coach Jeremy Atwell, opting against offering him a contract for the 2019-20 school year.

Atwell has been with the team for five seasons. Under his watch, the Terriers posted a 29-26 record with several playoff appearances.

Atwell’s latest season was dramatic. On the field, the Terriers were 5-5 in the regular season with a first-round playoff exit. Off it, Atwell was a key player in an LHSAA investigation regarding the eligibility of quarterback Andrew Robison after he transferred from Vandebilt to Hahnville.

The Robison family alleged that Atwell pressured Andrew Robison to stay with the school after he expressed his intentions to transfer. In a counter-investigation after the Robison family won arbitration, Vandebilt was fined and found to have broken LHSAA rules for allegedly attempting to recruit Robison back to Houma after leaving for Hahnville.

The Robison family also has an active lawsuit against both the school and coach, which will head to court either later this year or in 2020.

The school announced the decision regarding Atwell’s future via a news release last week. In it, they thanked Atwell for his time with the team, while announcing that he will remain on staff for the remainder of the school year.

Atwell landed with the Terriers after a stint as the defensive coordinator with Nicholls. Before that, he’d coached at the high school ranks, including time at Thibodaux High.

School administration will conduct a search to find Atwell’s replacement.

BERGERON RESIGNS AT E.D. WHITE

Atwell’s departure isn’t the only local vacancy.

E.D. White coach Chris Bergeron announced his resignation last week, ending his five-season run as the Cardinals’ head football coach.

Under Bergeron, E.D. White posted a 36-23 record. The Cardinals won a postseason game this past season after scoring a 7-win regular season.

The season prior, E.D. White won the District 7-4A Championship.

Bergeron is resigning to spend more time with family. He said he will stay as a teacher at E.D. White and an assistant football coach — much like his predecessor, Kyle Lasseigne did when he left the job and Bergeron took the reigns.

The Cardinals have started a search to find its new football coach.
