Two locals are among 10 players chosen to the 2017-18 Preseason All-Southland Conference women’s basketball team.

Nicholls junior and Vandebilt graduate Cassidy Barrios and UNO senior guard and Houma native Randi Brown are both members of the team – each earning automatic spots on the roster after being named All-Conference picks last year.

Brown was a First-Team selection after averaging more than 20 points per game last year for UNO.

Barrios was named to the second team after starting 30 games for the Colonels last year and leading the team in almost every major stat.

Both players are expected to soar in the new season.

Barrios was a third-team All-Southland player last season – the backbone of a Colonels team that was ravished by injury.

A Raceland native and former Lady Terrier, Barrios averaged 15.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as a sophomore – all team highs. She also led Nicholls in field goal percentage, shooting 47 percent from the field.

Barrios’ consistency was her strength. She recorded seven double-doubles and had at least 10 points in all but two games.

Brown was outstanding, too.

A Houma native and Central Catholic graduate, she was one of the nation’s leading scorers, while also establishing herself as a WNBA prospect.

Brown drastically lifted her field goal percentage and her 3-point percentage last season, while also improving her defense.
