Players of the Week – Week 8 of the Prep Basketball Season

Honorable Mention: South Lafourche forward Victorianna Nelson – Lady Tarpons forward Victorianna Nelson had a triple-double this weekend at the Sugar Bowl Prep Classic, earning All-Tourney honors for the runner-up Lady Tarpons.

Bronze: E.D. White guard Kevin Johnson – Johnson is one heck of a player. The Cardinals guard and Nicholls signee scored 24 points on Friday to earn the Cardinals a district victory over Franklin. Johnson attacked the Hornets with dribble penetration.

Silver: H.L. Bourgeois guard I’Savier Allridge – Allridge is one of the unsung heroes of the Braves basketball team, but the kid can play. He scored 21 points on Friday against Central Lafourche to help key the Braves to a district win.

Gold: Houma Christian guard Dee Thomas – Thomas was terrific for Houma Christian this weekend, earning MVP honors at the Sugar Bowl Prep Classic, while helping her team win the gold bracket championship. Thomas had 23 points and 12 rebounds in the title-winning game.

The High-Five

(Area girls’ basketball teams; boys’ list next week)

1. Houma Christian: OK, I’ll quit doubting Houma Christian now. After a second victory over South Lafourche this season, I’m ready to admit that the Christian Warriors are the best girls’ basketball team in our area. Kudos to Coach Tammy Martin and staff on a job well done.

2. South Lafourche: The Lady Tarpons are still awfully good, too. South Lafourche rolled through their weekend tournament until the Finals, including a huge victory over Helen Cox in the semifinals. They’re one heck of a team.

3. Ellender: The Lady Patriots are super young. Because of that, they sometimes look rough in patches. But they have athleticism that just can’t be taught and that makes them a matchup problem every single time they take the court.

4. E.D. White: The Lady Cardinals keep on rolling, owning one of the best records in Louisiana. It’s a crying shame they’re No. 4 on our list. The depth of talent in the area is absurd.

5. Thibodaux: I want to shout out my good friend Ashley Adams for doing a good job with the Thibodaux girls’ basketball team. It’s not easy to take over a team just a few days before the start of the season. But that’s what Adams has done, and she’s pretty much pulled it off in stride.

By The Numbers for Week 8 of the prep basketball season

5: The Vandebilt boys’ basketball team had a five-point halftime lead this weekend against Teurlings Catholic, but it didn’t stick. The Rebels battled back and handed the Terriers a 10th-straight loss to open the season.

11: South Lafourche junior post Victorianna Nelson had itchy palms this weekend at the Sugar Bowl Classic. Against Mount Carmel, Nelson recorded 11 steals, to go along with 27 points.

17: E.D. White’s girls’ basketball team play lethal defense on Friday against Franklin, holding the foe to just 17 points over the 32-minute game. The Lady Cardinals improved to 17-1 in the easy victory.

41: H.L. Bourgeois duo I’Savier Allridge and Chance Gasery were huge in Friday night’s win over Central Lafourche, combining for 41 points in a huge Braves victory, which gave the team an early leg up in the District 7-5A chase.

Christian Warriors win Sugar Bowl Classic

The Houma Christian girls’ basketball team proved again this weekend why its one of the favorites to win the Division IV State Championship.

The Warriors rolled through the Sugar Bowl Classic at the Alario Center this past weekend, pushing past several quality opponents on their way to winning the title.

The Christian Warriors beat two teams to get to the championship round, pushing past Zachary on Friday night in quarterfinals and then Dominican in the semifinals – both blowout wins.

That set up a showdown with South Lafourche in the finals – a rematch from a game played on Nov. 28 in Houma.

The Christian Warriors got a lead early in the game and dominated the final minutes, using a late surge to secure a 54-36 victory.

Senior guard Dee Thomas was huge throughout the tournament, earning MVP of the Gold Bracket of the event.

Houma Christian is now 15-7 on the season.

They hosted Ellender on Monday with no score available at press-time. They will travel and play St. Martin’s on Friday night.

Weather roughed up sports weekend

Wet, cold weather roughed up the weekend sports schedule, canceling or postponing several events that were scheduled for Friday or Saturday nights.

South Lafourche postponed its game with St. Amant, which was scheduled for Friday night. The teams played on Tuesday at East Ascension High School.

South Terrebonne High School was scheduled to play Lutcher on Friday, but the schools have postponed the game to Feb. 9.

Ellender was set to take on Madison Prep over the weekend in Baton Rouge, but the game was canceled, as the Patriots didn’t want to travel in the wet, wintry conditions.

Weather also caused a few games locally to be moved up.

Thibodaux High School was supposed to play East St. John in both boys’ and girls’ basketball games on Friday, but the schools moved up the contest to Thursday night to avoid the ugly weather.

The Wildcats won both the boys’ and girls’ meetings over Thibodaux, earning key victories in the District 7-5A Championship Chase.

Allridge commits to United States Navy

H.L. Bourgeois senior guard I’Savier Allridge is going to defend the country when he graduates from high school.

The Braves basketball program sent out a Twitter post this week, announcing that Allridge had committed to the United States Navy this week – an occasion that coach Andrew Caillouet said was a proud moment for Allridge and the entire H.L. Bourgeois community.

Allridge is a standout player for the Braves, one of the best combo guards in the area.

On Friday night against Central Lafourche, the senior pitched in 21 points – his first game since making the announcement about joining the Navy.
