The goal of just about every prep basketball player is to win the final game of their senior season.

That wish became reality this past weekend for some of the top local standouts on the hardwood.

The Bayou All-Stars beat the River All-Stars 105-97 Saturday night at the Sports Medicine Center at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center Bayou/River All-Star Game, presented by the Thibodaux Lions Club.

Ellender senior Quentin Scott won MVP for the Bayou team, scoring a game-high 24 points in the victory.

But more important than the win was the event – an outlet to give some of the best players in the community one last chance to take the floor before closing the door on their prep careers.

Bayou All-Stars coach Derek Szush said the annual event is one of his favorite times of the year – an annual showcase of how good the basketball is in the area.

“It’s just a great thing,” Szush said. “To be able to see these kids and the things that they’re capable of doing is incredible. To have them all on the same team for their last game at the high school level is something that we’re happy to be a part of. It’s a great send-off for those guys – something that they really deserve.”

For the Bayou Team, Scott’s dominance was on full-display.

The District 7-4A MVP impacted the game on both ends of the floor, using his versatility and ability to score both inside and out to attack the River’s defense.

Scott is an uncommitted senior, who will be making a college choice in the coming weeks.

His final impression at the prep level was a good one – especially considering that several college coaches and scouts were in attendance at the game.

Scott’s father, Ellender coach Cornell Scott, said several times throughout the season that he’s proud of the hard work his son has done to get to where he is today.

“He’s put in the time,” Scott said. “I’m so proud of him. It’s been a pleasure to coach him, and I’m so happy for all of the successes that he’s been able to have.”

But Scott wasn’t the game’s only star. The contest was filled with ‘em.

The River team was led by East St. John star Raekwon McKnight, who scored 21 points. Hahnville standout Mason Aucoin won the River’s MVP award, notching 20 points in the game.

The game was close throughout, and several players wowed the crowd with athletic plays.

“It’s an awesome thing,” River head coach and Lutcher boys’ basketball coach Chase Delrie said. “You see these guys compete against one another all year long, and that’s special in its own. To see them all on the floor together is even better.”

The event was more than just a basketball game.

Before the tip-off, some of the game’s top dunkers went to battle in a slam dunk contest – an event which pleased the crowd.

Scott put on a show, as did Central Lafourche senior Quindon Charles. But they were both outlasted by East St. John’s Troy Green, who won the title.

A 3-point shoot-out also took place, which Aucoin won.

“We really want to keep pushing to take this to the next level,” Szush said. “It’s something that the kids definitely enjoy, and we’re proud to deliver it every year to the community.”

The game will be televised on tape delay today at 5 p.m. on WHNO-TV Channel 20.
