Nicholls State University junior kicker Lorran Fonseca has been named one of 13 finalists for the Fred Mitchell Award, which is given to the best kicker in the country in the Football Championship Subdivision, NCAA Division II and Division III ranks.

The organization sent out their list of finalists on Monday afternoon and Fonseca was selected – a fitting honor given the dominant season for the kicker, who transferred to Nicholls this season and played his first season in Thibodaux this fall.

Fonseca led the FCS in made field goals, making 19-of-23 tries. He set Nicholls’ program record for the most made kicks in a year. He also earned All-Southland Second Team honors.

Fonseca also made 35-of-36 extra points and led Nicholls with 92 points. On kickoffs, the powerful-legged kicker was also a weapon, booming 36 touchbacks.

The winner of the Fred Mitchell Award will be announced on Dec. 11. It is based on on-field performance and community work.
