Sure, the actual games won’t start for another few weeks.

But the college football season is finally just about here.

Teams around the country are opening camp early next week in anticipation of the 2017 season, which starts in about a month for most teams.

Nicholls State University gets to play earlier than most.

The Colonels open their season on Thursday, August 31 in a home date with McNeese – a rare Southland Conference opener for the team.

Nicholls opens camp on Tuesday and the team will have multiple practices before the season.

Third-year coach Tim Rebowe said he’s excited to get started.

“It’s going to be a little different for us, but we’re going to actually play a game the first week of the season,” Rebowe said. “The past few years, we’d always had an open date that first week. So because of that, we’d report to camp a little later than most of the other teams in the country. … But this year, we get to report on time with everybody else and our guys are excited. They’re ready to take the field and get started.”

The Colonels were successful last season, posting a 5-4 mark in Southland Conference games – the most victories the team had accumulated within league play in the past several seasons.

Rebowe said optimism around the program remains high – especially with several players back off last year’s squad.
