The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team won the Southland Conference last year and made the NCAA Tournament.

In 2018-19, the team returns the lion’s share of its roster.

Surely, they’re picked to win the Southland Conference in the preseason, right?

Wrong.

They’re picked fourth.

And they didn’t even get a first-place vote to boot.

The Colonels will again be in the underdog position in 2018-19 as Southland Conference coaches and sports information directors picked Nicholls to finish the season fourth at Southland Conference Media Day in Houston, Texas.

Nicholls didn’t get any of the 26 first-place votes, as Lamar (24 votes) gobbled them up en route to being the preseason pick to win the championship. Rounding out the top five were Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas, Nicholls and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

But the Colonels proved last year that those preseason polls mean nothing.

Nicholls was picked to finish ninth last year and rose up out of nowhere and won the league.

The Colonels return several contributing players off last year’s roster this winter, including Vandebilt graduate Cassidy Barrios, who is the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year.

The Colonels also have back guard Tykeria Williams, who is a Preseason All-Southland Selection.
