One night into the Southland Conference basketball season and it’s becoming obvious: It’ll take a Herculean effort to pry that championship away from the Nicholls Colonels.

The Colonels’ women started their Southland Championship defense in style on Wednesday night, scoring a season-high 97 points in a 97-86 victory over Northwestern State.

The victory was the Southland Conference opener for both teams. It improved the Colonels to 7-6 on the season.

It also showed that the Colonels have more weapons than what may meet the eye.

For a lot of the non-conference slate, senior guard Cassidy Barrios shined, dominating games and continuing to earn her place as one of the best players in Nicholls’ history.

But on Wednesday night against the Lady Demons, the supporting cast around Barrios had a field day, as well.

Four Colonels scored in double figures in the win and three others had six points in victory.

Barrios led the Colonels with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists, but Airi Hamilton (19 points), Chrystal Ezechukwu (15 points) and Bryanna Washingotn (14 points) also pushed the team to a win.

Nicholls led 42-33 at halftime, then withstood several Lady Demons pushes in the second half to secure the win.

The Colonels fended off those pushes by shooting 51 percent from the floor and 40 percent from behind the 3-point line in victory.

The Colonels will now look to build on their 1-0 start with a home date with Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
