A local football player had one of his lifelong dreams come true recently — the chance to play football at the next level.

Central Lafourche graduate Ross Davis announced that he’s accepted an offer to play at McMurry University — a four-year NCAA Division III university in Abilene, Texas.

Davis stands 5-foot, 6-inches and weighs 220 pounds. With Central Lafourche, he was a lineman. At the next level, he figures to be a fullback/H-back.

Davis said while at McMurry, he will also be a honor’s student, adding that the opportunity to compete collegiately, while also getting a quality education is something he’s grateful for.

“It feels absolutely wonderful,” Davis said. “If someone would have asked me 10 years ago if I would be playing college football, I probably would have said no. Without strong support and the big man upstairs, none of this would be possible.”

Davis worked hard to get to this level — both on the field and off it.

On the field, Davis was a multi-year letter winner for the Trojans’ spread offense, playing on the offensive line.

In Davis’ time with the Trojans, Central Lafourche was a high-powered offense, which routinely put up crooked numbers on opponents, while also featuring prominent names like David Robinson, Kenneth Poindexter, Nelton Allen and others.

After graduation, Davis said he knew he wanted to play at the next level, but didn’t know if it would be possible because of how few opportunities are out there at that level.

“My dad and I talked to a couple of recruiting companies to get a general idea on how to work the system,” Davis said. “I have been contacting multiple schools the past two years and a handful of them actually responded back.”

One of those schools was McMurry — a four-year program which heavily utilizes Louisiana talent to fill out its roster.

The Warhawks were 2-8 last season under head coach Lance Hinson.

In both 2016 and 2015, the team won four games. With several returnees back off last year’s team, the Warhawks hope to get back to prominence in 2018.

Davis said while looking for schools with his dad, McMurry was one of the first to reply back, showing interest.

That initial interest, combined with McMurry’s strong academic programs, led to a commitment and the dream come true of getting a spot at the next level.

Davis said the Warhawks’ coaches said they loved his will to progress and learn in his game.

“I chose McMurry because they were the first ones to say, ‘We want you to play here,’” Davis said. “Also, I am enrolled in the honors program here at McMurry University.”

So now, the challenge is to work hard and get ready for the season.

Davis said McMurry coaches see him as a fullback/H-back in the team’s offense, which will be a bit of a change for him after working on the offensive line throughout his career.

Davis said he is approaching the offseason with diligence, adding that he will do anything he can to help the team on the field this fall.

“I am willing to fit in wherever the coaches see me fit,” he said.

The incoming freshman said he didn’t know if he’d get an opportunity to play at the next level, but now that it’s here, he said he will not take any day for granted, nor any rep in practice or in games.

“Between now and then, I will constantly push myself to work hard each and every day and become the best I can be to try and get that starting position,” Davis said. “I have been working hard physically and mentally, but mostly mentally because I have to focus on my grades to maintain my honors and keep my spot on this team.”

McMurry begins its season on Aug. 30 against Trinity University.

The Warhawks will face Louisiana College this season, but the game will be in Abilene on Oct. 13.

The closest the team will come to Louisiana will be an Oct. 6 date with Belhaven on Oct. 6.
