Five Nicholls softball players are on the Preseason All-Southland Conference team.

That’s the good news.

But what’s even better is that none are seniors, which means that both the present and the future are awfully bright for the upstart program.

The Southland released its preseason awards list this week, picking the Colonels to finish second in the highly competitive league, while placing the five players on the preseason awards list.

Of the five, three players were selected to the First Team and two others were Second-Team picks.

The first-teamers are juniors Kasey Frederick and Megan Landry and sophomore Samantha Mracich – all unquestionably among the top players in the league.

Frederick, a first baseman, is a slugger. She hit above .300 last year and had 33 RBI.

Landry is a top-flight pitcher, posting a 16-8 record and a 2.68 ERA last season in the circle for the Colonels – one of the top returning pitchers in the league.

Mracich is a centerfielder and is an electric player. As a freshman, she nearly hit .400 and recorded 26 multi-hit games. Mracich also had 16 stolen bases.

In addition to the first-team honorees, the Colonels also landed juniors Amanda Gianelloni and Veronica Villafranco on the second-team.

Gianelloni is a prized shortstop who hit .322 last season. Villafranco is a stop-gap catcher with a power arm and the ability to hit for power. She posted a .284 average last season.

The Colonels begin the 2018 season Feb. 9 at Southeastern Louisiana’s Tournament.
