Houma native and NFL Champion Elijah McGuire was given the Key to the City by Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove and Councilman John Navy at a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning at the renovated Mechanicville Gym  — where McGuire played ball as a child.

“The love is crazy,” McGuire said after the ceremony. “I enjoy it.”

McGuire also talked about his experience winning Super Bowl 54 with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“…Everybody that’s in the NFL, that’s what they want—that experience, but it’s hard to get there,” he said. “To just be with a team, and get there and experience it is awesome.”

Although he had great careers playing for Vandebilt Catholic High School and University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and is an NFl Champion, he still holds the Mechanicville community close to his heart.

“I’m a product of my environment. I’ll never change,” he said. “…I’ll take everything on my shoulders to protect this community.”
