LSU looked every bit the part of a College World Series contender.
Nicholls had moments and applied pressure several times in the 12-inning game.
Both teams stayed healthy.
It was a successful fall exhibition for both teams.
LSU beat Nicholls 15-3 in a 12-inning exhibition game on Sunday afternoon in Thibodaux.
Both LSU coach Paul Mainieri and Nicholls coach Seth Thibodeaux’s comments echoed one another. Each said the game was a great opportunity to compete and get better before the season begins in the spring.
“It’s great to play somebody with a different colored uniform at this time of the year,” Mainieri said. “I think our players get a little tired of scrimmaging against each other every day, so when you go out and compete against somebody else, it brings out the best in you. I thought it was a benefit to our team to compete in a different environment, and we played very well in so many areas.”
“It’s great,” Thibodeaux said. “It’s a chance to see some things and put some guys in different situations and see how they compete. I think these things make your club better and it’s a great opportunity to compete against a top-tier team.”
LSU’s depth won out in the scrimmage.
The Tigers won the first nine innings of the scrimmage 7-3, using home runs and extra base hits to control the action.
Nicholls manufactured runs, scoring on a wild pitch, a bases loaded walk and then also when LSU went over their pitch limit for an inning, which (per scrimmage rules) generated a run.
In the late stages, LSU’s depth won out.
The Tigers scored runs in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings to extend the lead to its final margin.
The game was a dress rehearsal of sorts for what’s going to be happening in the future.
Nicholls plays a home-heavy schedule in 2020, including a home date with LSU on Feb. 19.
Thibodeaux said one of the keys for the Colonels in 2020 will be to dominate their home field.
“We have to look to dominate at home,” Thibodeaux said. “We play so many games here – just playing .500 baseball at home won’t be nearly good enough.”
