If the so-called experts are right, it won’t be a bright, rosy basketball season for the Nicholls State University basketball teams.

The Colonels took part in Southland Conference Media Days this past week and coaches and sports information directors around the league voted on the league’s preseason polls.

Nicholls’ men are picked to finish 10th out of 13 teams, despite a prosperous offseason which included an undefeated trip to the Bahamas and the idea that the team will now better understand second-year coach Richie Riley’s scheme.

The women didn’t get much respect, either.

The Colonels’ women’s team was picked to finish ninth in the league – one vote away from Northwestern State, which was picked to finish eighth.

Nicholls returns a slew of its best players from last year, including Vandebilt graduate Cassidy Barrios.

Voters tabbed Stephen F. Austin as the preseason champion of the league and Lamar was picked to win the league for the women.

Both teams will begin their seasons in early November.
