Renovations are underway to the infield and foul territory at Nicholls State University’s baseball diamond.

As previously reported in the The Times, the Colonels are installing Geo-Surfaces artificial turf in both areas of the park, while also renaming the team’s baseball diamond as Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

The renaming is to commemorate the support shown by the Meyer family to the Colonels throughout the years.

Recently, longtime Nicholls supporter Tommy Meyer gave a pledge to Nicholls baseball in honor of his brother Ben, a former Nicholls student who died in a car accident in 2001 at the age of 23.

“I am very appreciative of Tommy – not only from a professional standpoint – I consider him to be a very, very close friend and great supporter,” Nicholls coach Seth Thibodeaux said. “He’s been by my side since I’ve been the head coach here. I think he has a true, sincere love for Nicholls athletics and the people that work here and he wants to be part of it.”

The commitment from the Meyer family will help fund multiple facility enhancements at Nicholls, according to a release issued by the university.

Athletic Director Matt Roan said that will help Nicholls compete with other schools in the Southland Conference.

In this particular project, Geo-Surfaces, a Louisiana-based company, will place replicated grass and drainage on the field – the highest density turf product in the industry.
