Today has been a great day for the Nicholls State University baseball team.

South Lafourche standout outfielder Austin Cantrelle and South Terrebonne infielder/pitcher Connor Brunet both announced on social media this afternoon that they’ve given verbal commitments to the Colonels and will join the team next summer – after their 2018 prep seasons.

In Cantrelle and Brunet, the Colonels have secured two of the top locals in the Class of 2018 – a pair of impact players who are coming off solid junior seasons.

Cantrelle hit .442 in district play and .385 for the season and was one of the top defensive outfielders in the state last year for South Lafourche.

Brunet is a sure-handed defensive-minded infielder and top of the order hitter for the Gators, who also is a top-end rotation pitcher in district games.

Both players said they’re excited to stay at home for their collegiate careers.

“I’m extremely blessed to say I’ve committed to play baseball at Nicholls State University,” Cantrelle said in a tweet, which also included a photo of himself and the Nicholls logo. “I can’t wait to be a Colonel.”

“I’m beyond blessed to announce that I have committed to Nicholls State University to further my education and baseball career,” Brunet added in a tweet, which included a photo of himself with coach Seth Thibodeaux.

Both Cantrelle and Brunet are good friends who play summer baseball together.

Each player has one season of prep eligibility left.
