Week 5 Players of the Week

HONORABLE MENTION: E.D. White’s offensive line – The Cardinals got their first win of the season on Friday night, and the team’s offensive line played a huge role in the win, opening up big-time holes for the team’s playmakers.

BRONZE: Thibodaux athlete Tyler Brown – With Friday’s game against East St. John still very much up for grabs, Brown made a huge play, returning an interception 87 yards and taking it to the house to help give his team an advantage. The Tigers have now won four-straight after an opening-week loss.

SILVER: Vandebilt halfback Michael LeCompte – As if the Terriers needed more offensive weapons, Lecompte broke out on Friday night, helping Vandebilt score a huge victory over the Greenies. The junior halfback rushed 17 times for 188 yards to help Vandebilt get a huge victory over Newman.

GOLD: H.L. Bourgeois quarterback Jude LeCompte – Down big against Central Lafourche, LeCompte played about as well as he ever has in his storied career, gashing the Trojans defense for 224 yards rushing and two touchdowns to help the Braves rally back and score a huge victory.

The High-Five

1. Thibodaux: The Tigers have found their stride and are playing as well as they have all season. Beating East St. John was a huge win. The Wildcats are playing good ball in that Class 5A district. Now, the challenge will be for Thibodaux to try and beat Hahnville and Destrehan.

2. Vandebilt: The Terriers could have easily taken the top spot this week, because they’re enjoying one hell of a start to the season. The most impressive thing about this team is its ability to both run and throw the ball to hurt opponents. They’re the favorites in the area’s Class 4A district.

3. Central Lafourche: The Trojans have had the ball bounce their way a couple times so far this season, but on Friday night, things went the other way and the Trojans had a tough, hard-fought loss against H.L. Bourgeois. Central Lafourche had better be ready to roll on Friday, because Thibodaux is playing really good football.

4. Ellender: The Patriots got a huge comeback win against St. Martinville – a sign of exactly how far this team has come. Coach David McCormick ought to win the area’s Coach of the Year honors. What he and his staff have done to inspire the Patriots’ team is incredible.

5. H.L. Bourgeois: The Braves get into our top five after a huge comeback win over the Trojans on Friday night. Next up for the Braves is a non-district matchup with Westgate – a game the Braves absolutely have to win to reach the playoffs. That’s a big, big game.

By The Numbers for Week 5 of the Prep Football Season

0: With Central Lafourche’s loss to H.L. Bourgeois, there are now no undefeated teams in the Houma-Thibodaux area. We currently have five one-loss teams – the Trojans, Thibodaux, CCA, Vandebilt and Ellender.

1,000: Vandebilt’s game with Newman wasn’t one for the defensive-minded fan. The Terriers and Greenies combined for 87 points and more than 1,000 yards of total offense – a game Vandebilt won in the final minutes. That was a big-time win for Jeremy Atwell’s bunch.

69: Ellender’s offense has scored 69 combined points in the last two weeks – both close, hard-fought road victories. What’s perhaps most impressive about the Patriots’ output is that in comes in all phases. They easily lead the area in special teams touchdowns on the season.

79: South Lafourche thought it was going to go to halftime with momentum on Friday night against Plaquemine. After scoring a touchdown to cut the Green Devils lead to 17-13 right before half, Plaquemine got a one-play touchdown drive on a 79-yard halfback pass for a score.

H.L. Bourgeois – 42

Central Lafourche – 35

The Braves score 28-straight points to trump the Trojans – the team which handed H.L. Bourgeois its first loss one season ago. The Braves were behind 21-0 after the first quarter. To show that much guts to rally back and beat the Trojans is a job well done by coach Carey Melvin and his staff.

Destrehan – 44

Terrebonne – 17

The Wildcats are just too much for the Bayou teams right now. Destrehan improves to 5-0 on the season, and one will be hard-pressed to find a team that will be able to take down this powerful foe. For Terrebonne, the challenge is to avoid a repeat of last season’s fast start, but poor finish, after two-straight losses.

Thibodaux – 38

East St. John – 28

Thibodaux’s athletes were just too much for the Wildcats on Friday night. After an opening-week loss at St. Charles Catholic, Thibodaux has now battled back and has won four-straight games. The Tigers have a huge game with Central Lafourche coming up this week. That one will have big-time playoff and district-championship implications.

Ellender – 41

St. Martinville – 27

The Patriots were down early, but battled back, scoring their fourth-straight win under first-year coach Dave McCormick. The Patriots are a Cinderella story. We will get a fantastic taste for how good those guys truly are this week when they host Assumption.

Plaquemine – 29

South Lafourche – 13

Despite being down several starters, Plaquemine used a litany of big plays to push past South Lafourche. The Tarpons have got to find a way to limit mistakes and win close games. A meeting on Thursday with Morgan City should help. The Tarpons ought to be heavily favored in that one.

St. Amant – 52

South Terrebonne – 7

When you’re 0-4, the last team you want to face is St. Amant – an annual power in Class 5A. The Gators started the season with five-straight games against Class 5A competition. It’ll be interesting to see how the team fares on Friday against its first 4A opponent of the season – the Vandebilt Terriers.

Vandebilt – 46

Newman – 41

The Terriers score a big-time win against one of the best Class 2A programs in the state. Vandebilt gets a lot of love for its elite passing game. But on Friday night, the Terriers bullied Newman up front, using a powerful running game to keep the Greenies off balance.

E.D. White – 42

Franklin – 16

Kudos to Coach Chris Bergeron and his guys for the big-time win. E.D. White isn’t usually a 1-4 program, but the Cardinals are getting better and better every week. By the end of the season, we have no doubt that they’ll be playing some of their best football of the season.

CCA – 28

Catholic (PC) – 21

The clock is ticking for CCA. Quarterback and linebacker Caleb Seitz is just a few weeks away from coming back after breaking his collarbone. And while he rests, the Lions keep on winning, using a total team effort to push past their fellow Class 1A foe. That was a big-time win for CCA.

Ascension Christian – 34

Houma Christian – 20

The Warriors can’t get off their current slide, falling to a very good Ascension Christian team. But the schedule is about to lighten, so expect the Warriors to make a surge.
